SKATER INTERVIEW
An Interview with…Babe Ruthless
What about derby caught your attention? When did you first start playing?
I love the speed of derby. Being the fastest jammer on the track is always my biggest goal. I joined VCCD back in 2019 - starting with the Fresh Meat program. I made it through assessments that year and started training with the Vets! Sadly, I dropped out not long afterwards, and only made it back to the team this year. I just finished a second round of Fresh Meat and I'm excited to get to continue!
What was that “one moment” when you knew playing derby was the right thing for you?
Okay, maybe a lame story, but the first time I participated in a scrimmage after my initial Fresh Meat graduation. I was jamming and I remember breaking out of the pack first, and becoming lead jammer. It was exhilarating and exciting and just awesome to already have people cheering for you. I hope I get another moment like that soon!
What’s something you’ve learned playing derby that has translated into another part of your life?
Just not to give up. I think it's incredibly hard for me to stick with something. To show up to the track and feel determined and like I actually want to continue and work hard is an amazing feeling.
Do you have a favorite & a least favorite position? Can you elaborate?
Definitely jamming. That's my favorite position. I'm a girl who likes to go fast. Otherwise, I don't have an opinion! I'm still learning, haha.
What do you do to get ready for a bout?
I haven't been in a real, true bout yet. But once I do, I'll have to see! Hopefully the nerves don't get the best of me.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about playing derby?
Just try it. I know it can't be for everyone, but I really think it feels so empowering to so many people. It's a fantastic community and I know I've really made some friends for the long term already.
Finish this sentence: When I’m not playing derby, I am _____.
Watching movies. I'm a huge film buff! I even had a podcast about movies. (Feel free to search up "The Totally Inexpert, Expert Film Podcast")
Do you have a derby mentor?
No one specifically, but some of the girls and coaches have been incredibly helpful with my confidence! Anita is someone I really look up to for being so strong and caring.
What keeps you motivated to keep playing when things get tough?
I just have to remember that I feel better when I'm there and I'm with the team and I'm on the track. I'll tell ya, it can be difficult to get myself to go sometimes, especially with the long drive, but once I get there, it's all worth it.
What’s your favorite part of skating with VCDD?
Definitely the team! People are overly kind and supportive, it's really really nice. Stepping right in with the Vets after Fresh Meat felt terrifying, but everyone was just so nice, it was easy to feel like part of the team.
Any last bit of advice you'd like to give people??
My last piece of advice is just to try anything you're interested in. The risk is low and the reward is high!
