When did you start skating: 2022

SKATER INTERVIEW

An Interview with… Wham!

What about derby caught your attention? When did you first start playing?

My sibling, Stevi Kicks, recruited me! I started playing last year in February of 2023.

What was that “one moment” when you knew playing derby was the right thing for you?

I had come to a practice to watch my sibling play and one of the athletes approached me and asked if I was going to join Fresh Meat. I was sitting there wrapped in this blanket with a hood that looks like a cute little chicken's face. Definitely not tough-looking. But she believed in my ability to become part of the team. Before I even put my skates on I was welcomed into the group. Every practice I'm grateful to be around such badass and kind women.

What’s something you’ve learned playing derby that has translated into another part of your life?

It has really taught me patience. Its a slow climb to improve your skills, especially since I wasn't a strong skater to begin with. All good things take time.

Do you have a favorite & a least favorite position? Can you elaborate?

Oh man, right now, all positions are terrifying. I get stiff in the legs when I'm nervous so the captains only put me in the center of tripods in games. In practice, I love to jam even if I don't get through. Blocking is really fun too, until Fatal sends you to the floor.

What do you do to get ready for a bout?

I have only played in two bouts, but I do my best to focus on staying mindful. Every game is a learning opportunity.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about playing derby?

Do it!

Finish this sentence: When I’m not playing derby, I am _____.

doing schoolwork, gardening, spending time with my dogs, or just lounging.

Do you have a derby mentor?

I was assigned Tuffy the Vampire Skater as my mentor, but I look up to everyone. Everyone has different strengths and new things to teach me.

What keeps you motivated to keep playing when things get tough?

I try not to take it too seriously. Im doing my best and that's enough. All the endorphins from the physical exercise really keep me in a good mood though.

What’s your favorite part of skating with VCDD?

Everyone is accepting wanting to see you at practice. We're a team, even if we're on different letter teams, you know?
